Group walks start inside the Saltaire United Reformed church. Coaches booked with Salts Walks can drop off and pick up at the entrance to the drive, but please do not enter the drive as the drainage system is vulnerable to heavy vehicles. Thank you.

Coach party tourists visit SaltaireEach participant will be given an individual, handmade, laminated bookmark with the history of a real person who used to live and work in Saltaire village.  The tour starts with a very entertaining introduction, informing participants of the origins of Saltaire, with guides interacting with each other.

After the introduction and a chance to view this spectacular church, the group will be taken on a gentle meander around the village, allowing participants time to spot the house their character lived in, and to view the magnificent public buildings.

The whole experience 90 minutes.  We never walk faster than the slowest person.

Even people who do not like history enjoy our memorable walks.

Group prices for walks in costume and character are only £8.00 per person.

Testimonials from groups

walking tour of saltaire for tourist groupsJanet Dempsey and David Wilson, Farnley WI
We would just like to thank you for your guided tour of Saltaire, my wife and I were part of the ‘WI’ group, last Saturday morning. We have previously been to the mill to the David Hockney Galleries and didn’t know really what to expect but I have to say we were all pleasantly surprised by your funny and interesting performance.  Our friends mentioned quite a few times how much they had enjoyed, and learnt, from the visit. Obviously you have a huge knowledge of your subject and present it very, very well. You turned what we thought was going to be a good day into a great, absorbing and informative experience.

Martin Williams, Aughton & Ormskirk U3A Digital Camera Group ‘On behalf of my group, I would like to thank you for making our trip to Saltaire so special, most enjoyable.’

Mary Whitehead, Albion Church, said ‘Your guides were superb and what a wonderful way to pass on history. Each and every one of us enjoyed every minute and I thank you from the bottom of my heart for giving our church members such a thoroughly enjoyable day.’

Pat & Brian Mellor, Stand Unitarian Manchester ‘Thank you very much for organizing the walks for our visit yesterday. Everyone who went on them said how very enjoyable and interesting they were. The guides were excellent with both the information and their sense of humour. We all felt we knew a lot more about Sir Titus by the time we left.’

Richard Mills, Methodist Church Castleford Circuit ‘Many thanks for the guided tour, we all found your commentary delightful, it presented a whole new perspective on TS.’

Jaguar Drivers Club, Bob Mackman ‘Eee gel, yur a star! Each year we seem to find a person with knowledge & enthusiasm, thus year it were you!!! Your guides were great,  everyone said so, so must be rite.  We all loved it. Thank you so much,  you turned a good event into a great one! Keep it up.’

Morgan Club Visit to Saltaire, Richard Corke ‘I’m sure we won’t be alone in wanting to thank you for such an enjoyable and interesting tour of Saltaire today, Sunday. You made a freezing day great fun.’

coach party tour of SaltaireBurnsall Book Club, Doug and Jackie Godfrey ‘We really enjoyed the walk and the insight into life in Saltaire  under the rule of Titus.  It has inspired several of us to spend more time around Saltaire, especially visiting the park in the Spring and also to learn more about Titus and his philosophies. Congratulations on your excellent presentation. Thanks again

New Mill Probus Club, Bill Blair ‘On behalf of New Mill Probus Club members, I would like to thank you for a most illuminating and interesting tour of Saltaire village.  I can assure you that everyone thoroughly enjoyed your talk, quips and anecdotes, also the clever way you brought us in and made the village and its residents much more relevant, I am confident that in the not too distant future you will hear from New Mill Probus Club again.’

Skipton History Society, Graham Warner ‘I was a participant in Skipton History Society’s visit to Saltaire Village last Saturday, and I just wanted to say that I found the whole experience very interesting, which was due to you your in depth knowledge of the village.  Your excellent commentary brought to life how people lived and worked in those times.  Thank you very much for a fascinating tour.’

Wetherby U3A, Pat Baron ‘I would like to thank you on behalf of the Wetherby U3A for the superb tour that we went on today.  Everyone thoroughly enjoyed it and were very impressed with the facts and anecdotes you gave us and you certainly brought the history of Saltaire to life! I am sure that many of the group will revisit Saltaire and we will certainly recommend the tour to other members of the U3A.’

Saltburn U3A, Barbara Spight ‘Thank you so much for making our visit so memorable yesterday.  Everyone’s hospitality was wonderful and we so much enjoyed all the characters in costume , making the trip so interesting.I shall recommend you to all I meet.’

The Rotary Club of Oadby, Leicestershire, Jim Matthews  ‘I have to say the guided tour of Saltaire was definitely the most entertaining we have been on. To be honest, we always try to avoid guided tours of places of interest like the plague, having been subjected to some pretty horrendous experiences. I thought the pair of them were brilliant, striking just the right note between entertainment and imparting knowledge. They would certainly have put some of my old History lecturers to shame!’

West Bridgford U3A History Group, Keith Harrison ‘Everyone that made the journey to Saltaire on Monday, with the West Bridgford U3A History Group, had a great day. This was due, in no small measure, to you and your guide team. What a splendid way to be introduced to this lovely village.  When people left the coach back home every single person was profusely thankful for everything you did. From serving the refreshments, keeping in character throughout and stoically taking us round the village in that lovely Yorkshire rain! I only took over the group in January and this was my first attempt at organising an outside trip for them. It was so successful that my stock must have gone up in leaps and bounds! Please pass on my sincere thanks to all concerned, and give my best regards to Mrs. Toothill!’

Ashby History Outing, Leicestershire, Liz Jones ‘You promised that we would enjoy our visit to Saltaire and we certainly did. Saltaire came alive under the guidance of your guides. Thank you all.’

Dronfield Morning TG, Mrs Nunns ‘We would like to thank you very much for making our visit to Saltaire so memorable. Our ladies were delighted and have never stopped talking about the Rev Cowan.’

Stokesley and District U3A Group, Mike Petrie ‘Can I thank you all for a truly wonderful experience on our tour around Saltaire. I can truly say that we had wonderful value for money and so many of out group expressed to me how much they had enjoyed their visit. The costumed tour and the enthusiasm of the Guides made the experience of being in Saltaire ‘Come Alive’ and was greatly appreciated  by out members. We learnt so much more by having a guided tour and I would thoroughly recommend your tour to anyone else looking to obtain the “Saltaire Experience”.’

Liverpool Association of Women’s Clubs, Barbara Kerr ‘Everyone had a wonderful day with you in Saltaire – I have had nothing but praise from everyone on the trip. Thank you for giving us such a great experience.’

Todmorden U3A, Anne Lee ‘I’ve visited Saltaire many times over the past 20 years, however, this is the first time I have been on a guided tour, you added immensely to our knowledge about the inhabitants and their way of life as well as a fun element, our thanks for giving us such an enjoyable day and making it so special.’

Harrogate and Dales Association, Judith Webb ‘Thank you for your excellent tour of Saltaire. Your approach to the subject is both fun and interesting and we all enjoyed finding out who we were from out bookmarks . It is such an original idea everyone enjoyed seeing where they lived, and most went back after you left us. We will certainly be singing your praises to the rest of out Association.’

  1. Maria, a big big thank you from Salford u3a to yourself and Joanne. We had a really great time in Saltaire and your brilliantly entertaining talk and walk made our day so enjoyable. You are so knowledgeable about Saltaire’s history and everyone I spoke to was highly complimentary.

    Well done!
    Andrew
