About Salts Walks

Saltaire URCStarted by Maria Glot and Anne Heald at the Saltaire Tourist Information Centre in 1996 as Salts Walks, the Saltaire Village Experience now offers you a lot more than just guided walks of Saltaire.  Uniquely, we have enjoyed the patronage of Denys Salt, the great grandson of the founder of the village.

We are the premier UNESCO Saltaire World Heritage Site for guided Walks & Talks.  ‘Historical fact, fun and fiction with genuine Yorkshire diction’.  Best in Village!

  • Guided walks and entertaining talks of Saltaire World Heritage Site.  Tailor made to meet your need
  • Our famous costumed walks and talks
    • for groups
    • schools
    • clubs
    • and for individuals.
  • We are the only organisation whose guides actually live in Sir Titus Salt’s cottages.

Salts Walks guides are fully aware that ‘historians’ don’t always agree about the past. Even when there is an academic consensus, it rarely lasts. After a few decades, a new generation will start to interpret the same set of events in a different way. We all have an inner historian who regularly rewrites aspects of our own past. We can look back in sorrow, in anger and eventually even in gratitude on precisely the same sequence of events, so to get a more balanced view of what Saltaire is really about try a Salts Walk or book a Talk with guides accredited with more that 25 years of guiding in Saltaire.

Our great

Testimonials from individuals

Janet & John Steadman ‘Very many thanks for your wonderfully entertaining and educational guided walk.  It was the best time we have had for ages and we all thoroughly enjoyed it.  You are very knowledgeable and your witty descriptions, impersonations and stories made our day.  We certainly will be coming back.’

Linda Emmett and friends ‘What can I say?  The Salts Walk which seven of us signed up for on Saturday 29th January was the best guided talk I have ever been on and this includes all over the USA.  Maria is the most enthusiastic and entertaining person.  She is soooo funny!  The day was bitterly cold but no one discontinued the walk, because they just wanted to hear more and more.  Wonderful and well worth going on.’

Kath & Mike Worrall ‘We cannot thank you enough for your wonderful tour of Saltaire.  It was unforgettable and so enjoyable that we are recommending it to all our friends!’

Robin Schofield ‘I thought I would send you an email to say that your tour of Saltaire made the day.’

Margot & Don Perrett from Australia ‘Thank you for your wonderful walk.  We were the couple staying in George Street.  We do walking tours whenever possible and yours is more memorable than the best we have done in London and many European walks.  Thank you so very much!’

Penny Couling ‘I wanted to let you know how much we enjoyed our walk on Wednesday morning.  We were totally impressed by all aspects of the site, and our guide provided so much fascinating information and was a charming person.’

Ian and Averil McHaffie ‘We were part of the party of 6 to whom you gave an excellent tour on Saturday 12 October round Saltaire.  Fe Norris, who had been before, booked us in, and it was well worth it.  Your information, good-humoured repartee, informed delivery and detailed knowledge were first class!  We thoroughly enjoyed your tour.  Well done, and very many thanks.’
