Across the Bradford area there are little known and hidden gems of public art. William George Mitchell (1925-2020) was a celebrated sculptor, artist and designer. His Grade II Listed ‘Story of Wool’ can be seen for free in Valley Drive, Ilkley and next time you nearly pass by Kirkgate Market in Bradford, look up to see another of his sculptures.

Hidden in a storage warehouse are 13 panels removed from the old Bradford & Bingley Brutalist HQ depicting local scenes like the Five Rise Lock and the Wool Exchange. If Bradford’s bid to be the 2025 City of Culture is successful, they must surely be placed on display.

Washing lines were a common sight strung across streets all over the West Riding, but were banned in the Macturk Grove Almshouses in Bradford and in Saltaire Village, where there’s a theory that Titus Salt wanted the streets in his village to be bloomers-free.
