Schools / Education Groups

BIG NEWS: Our famous Saltaire experience for schools is now available as a dramatic costumed presentation in your school.

We offer lessons that pupils/students will never forget, and they walk away saying they never liked history until they met up with a Saltaire Experience.

Includes a handmade laminated bookmark for each participant with the real history of a character that used to live and work in Saltaire on it and a set of Rules for living in the village. This means that each participant  is guaranteed a completely unique character. Watch students light up then squeal with delight as they find out they are married to each other and collapse with laughter when they see some of them are married to their teachers.

Cost depends upon numbers and logistics but be sure that it will be a lot less than bringing pupils to Saltaire.

School Girl at Saltaire

The information below is related to previous school trips to visit Saltaire but it will give you a good understanding of what to expect in this brand new in school experience as we transport Saltaire and it’s fascinating and fun history to your school.

“Imagine  people that are funny while factual, that are educational while exciting, that are crazy while clever; those people are your guides.  Your tours for schools are enjoyable and exciting, funny and fabulous; this is how I would describe the amazing trip you provide for schools.” Baildon C of E Primary School, Ellen Watling

Education Groups have been visiting Saltaire since Sir Titus Salt built his village, in fact he was the first guide for this World Heritage Site.  Clearly, we take our cue from him.

We have a great many years’ experience in looking after all types of educational groups, from  primary schools to PhD students.

There is very little we do not know about Saltaire World Heritage Site and we regularly answer questions about the social history, philanthropy, history of the buildings, conservation, town planning, architecture, regeneration, recycling, textiles, the dyeing industry, medicine and of course the Victorians.

Mill Worker Sarah EllenSo teachers, when planning a trip to Saltaire please contact us.

We offer lessons that pupils/students will never forget, and they walk away saying they never liked history until they experienced a Salts Walk.

“One girl said it was the best school trip she had ever been on…we would like to book our visit for next year.”

Derrick Rooke
Lightcliffe Primary School

We start inside the Saltaire United Reformed Church, with an introduction. Each participant is given a handmade laminated bookmark with the history of a real person who lived and worked in Saltaire on it. (We constantly add  and update these characters as we meet and are given information from the many descendants of the residents of the village.)

This means that each participant  is guaranteed a completely unique character. Watch students light up when they discover their character’s house, then squeal with delight as they find out they are married to each other and collapse with laughter when they see some of them are married to their teachers.

Our walks can be tailor made to meet your curriculum needs.

Our tours have the added advantage of allowing students new to a school, or university, to socialize.  Pupils often arrive  as strangers and leave as friends, particularly first years attending a senior school, and undergraduates starting courses at college or university.

In addition, our guided walks have the added benefit of giving the groups a thirty minute, or more, walk. As we all know, walking is wonderful exercise!

To make a booking or enquiry simply fill out our contact form with your preferred date and time and we will get back to you.  You also are most welcome to email or phone.

  1. Hi,

I am thinking of bringing 3 different Year 3 classes to visit Saltaire next half term Oct – Dec for a costume guided walk. What days are available preferably a Wed, Thurs & Friday?

    Emma Gibson (Year 3 teacher)

  2. Hi!
I brought my Year 3 class last year for a guided tour, and am very interested to bring them again. This time we have a 1 1/2 form entry with 2 main class teachers and 41 pupils, although we have space for 45 and it’s entirely possible we may end up with a couple more before June.

I’m just wondering if it would be possible for you to accommodate us some time in June? We could have two groups over the day – one in the morning and one in the afternoon although I’m not sure how you’d want us to work it out but we can be flexible in the grouping and times, working with what you think is the best use of your time (but coming from Wigan, we’d probably end up coming for 10.30 rather than 10.00).

Hope you can help, my class and I had a wonderful time last year and I’m very excited to bring my new class to see Saltaire and experience the tour and the wonderful village!

    Regards,
    Louise
